Make up your own punchline

Lauren Weinstein’s Blog: Stalling Cars Via OnStar: A Hacker’s Dream Come True?:

GM apparently plans to perhaps make this all possible. It’s been announced that they’ll be equipping nearly two million of their 2009 model vehicles (that have OnStar installed), with the capability to be remotely shut down to idle via OnStar commands at the request of law enforcement.

According to the article Lauren links to, if this gizmo were installed in all the cars in the country, it might (might) be possible to avert 400 deaths a year that occur as a result of high-speed car chases. So do that math, and then start thinking about how many people could be killed in the various scenarios where people other than law enforcement folks acting within the performance of their duties get access to this capability. The mind just boggles.
